These and other studies suggest that positive motivational messaging can play an important role in supporting addiction recovery and helping individuals maintain their sobriety over the long term. For example, a systematic review and meta-analysis of 19 randomized controlled trials found that motivational interviewing was significantly more effective than no treatment or usual care in reducing alcohol consumption and promoting abstinence in individuals with alcohol use disorders (Hettema, Steele, & Miller, 2005). Another study found that a text message-based intervention that provided daily motivational messages to individuals in substance abuse treatment significantly increased the likelihood of achieving abstinence and remaining in treatment compared to a control group (Obermayer et al., 2015). These studies highlight the potential benefits of incorporating positive motivational messaging into addiction recovery programs.
